An Engine Management System (EMS) is the combination of sensors, the ECU, and actuators that work together to control an internal combustion engine's fuel injection, ignition timing, idle speed, and emissions control.
The Sensor-to-Actuator Loop
The EMS continuously reads inputs like crankshaft position, throttle position, intake air temperature, and manifold absolute pressure. Based on these values, it calculates the correct amount of fuel to inject and the precise moment to fire the spark plug — often thousands of times per minute.
