Functional Safety Basics for Automotive Engineers

Functional safety is the discipline of ensuring that electronic and software systems in a vehicle behave safely, even when something goes wrong. In the automotive industry, this is governed primarily by the ISO 26262 standard.

Why Functional Safety Matters

As vehicles rely more heavily on software to control critical functions like braking, steering, and acceleration, a single software fault could have serious safety consequences. Functional safety practices exist to systematically identify, mitigate, and manage these risks.

Understanding ASIL Levels

ISO 26262 defines Automotive Safety Integrity Levels (ASIL A through D) based on the severity, exposure, and controllability of a potential hazard. ASIL D represents the highest risk, requiring the most rigorous development and verification processes, while ASIL A requires comparatively lighter safety measures.

The Safety Lifecycle

  • Hazard analysis and risk assessment
  • Safety requirements definition at system, hardware, and software levels
  • Design and implementation with safety mechanisms (redundancy, monitoring, fail-safes)
  • Verification and validation against safety goals
